Be a Solar CitiSun
You may have an opinion about plans to move toward Time of Use electric rates in Colorado.
There is a very important action you can take right away. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission, (PUC) is taking public comments on its plans to require most residential electric rates in Xcel territory to move to a Time of Use (TOU) structure. Comments will be accepted only through APRIL 17, 2020. Some of you may have participated in the pilot program for these new rates.
There are several benefits to TOU rates in helping us all be more responsible for our energy usage. Basically, these rates are higher when electricity is more costly for the utility such as weekday afternoon and early evenings in the summer. When costs are lower, such as late at night, rates are lower.
TOU has several benefits – some directly impacting both solar and electric vehicle owners.
So long as the “signal” of price difference is significant, many of us we will adjust our usage to wait for a lower cost time of day to turn on appliances such as an electric dryer or dishwasher.
For EV owners, most charge at home overnight and will benefit from the lowest cost electricity.
For those with rooftop solar, much of the solar generation will occur during the highest cost period of the day, potentially increasing your monthly savings for the life of your system.
