This 2004 tract home was promptly improved after the Smiths purchased it in 2012.  They added 10kW of solar photovoltaics, and replaced their standard HVAC system with a hybrid heat pump system, which only uses gas when the outside air is below freezing.  They also had a contractor super-insulate the home from the basement and crawl space to the attic.  Although they still use natural gas for cooking and hot water, their monthly Xcel Energy bill never exceeds $50 and their solar panels never generate less electricity than they use.
